Harry F. Filkorn, Sr., 97, of Warren, entered into eternal life at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016 in Washington Square Nursing Center in Warren with his loving family at his side under the comfort of hospice.

Harry was born October 22, 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the son of the late Louis and Ida (Nahalka) Filkorn and came to Warren as a small child.

A 1937 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country faithfully and honorably during World War II and was Prisoner of War in Germany during that time.  Harry received the World War II Victory Medal, the European Theatre Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart for Bravery.  He was awarded the rank of 1st Lieutenant and discharged into United States Air Force Reserves and served a total of 16 years of military service to his country before being honorably discharged on December 10, 1952.  

Harry worked for Taylor Winfield where he designed, built and repaired transformers.  He retired in 1986.

Harry was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Warren and was a member of the Veteran of Foreign War, and the Association of Former Prisoners of War from Romania. He enjoyed aviation, gardening, fishing, cycling and was a Cleveland Indians fan.  Most of all Harry was a family man and enjoyed the time that he spent with his children and grandchildren.

Harry was married to the former Ruth A. Israel on April 7, 1956 and they were married for 56 years until her passing on February 15, 2013.

Harry is survived by four children Harry F. Filkorn Jr. of Los Angeles, John B. (Roxanne) Filkorn of Warren, Peter K. (Elna) Filkorn of Gilbert, Arizonia and Diane R. Filkorn of Warren, four grandchildren, John Paul, Jennifer, Heather and Mark Filkorn, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by his siblings Ida (Walter) Abbott, Louis (Marian), William (Helen), Edward (Mary) Filkorn, Helen (Thomas) Herman, Ann (Alex) Bugzavich, Mary Filkorn and John Filkorn.

Calling hours will take place on Monday, May 2, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Sinchak & Sons Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will begin with Closing Prayers to be recited on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be offered 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Bernard R. Schmalzried officiating.  Burial will follow with full military honors in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
