Andrew P. “Andy” Onder, 93, of North Jackson and formerly of Warren, entered eternal life peacefully with his family at his side at 9:44 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2017 in St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.

Andy was born on January 25, 1924 in North Braddock, Pennsylvania the son of the late John and Anna Mirdo Onder and was a lifelong area resident.

A 1942 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Andy enlisted into the United States Army that following year.  He fought with the 617th Engineer Heavy Equipment Company during World War II.  Andy served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre as a heavy truck driver.  He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, Good Conduct Medal with clasp bronze arrow head and the World War II Victory Medal.  Andy was honorably discharged with the rank of technician fifth grade on January 13, 1946.

Andy worked for Mullins Manufacturing and Truscon and retired in 1986 from General Motors as a press operator after 12 years of service.

Andy was devoted to his faith and was a friend and met often with Bishop George Murray of the Diocese of Youngstown about many issues surrounding his faith. He had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother and shared that devotion openly and prayerfully reciting the rosary daily along with sharing that devotion with the residents at Gillette Nursing Home and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Home, where his wife, Inez, was a resident.

Andy was old school in his faith and was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish in Vienna.  He was a former member St. James, St. Pius X, SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Church all in Warren.  Andy was a member of the SS. Cyril & Methodius 50+ Club and belonged to a Rosary Cenacle.  Andy was Pro Life and often protested abortion. He belonged to Habitat for Humanity and once built homes with former President Jimmy Carter and his wife in San Diego, CA. 

He was an avid traveler, visiting places abroad and enjoyed golf and carpentry; building the home in which he raised his family on Central Parkway in Warren.

Andy was married to the former Inez Baca on August 23, 1947 and they were married for 60 years until her passing on December 7, 2007.

He is survived by six children Thomas A. (Lan) of Canberra, Australia, Juliana M. Twardzik of Garrettsville, Mary Ellen (Joe) Shoemaker of Garrettsville, Theresa L. (Tim) Stosik of Hillsboro, Paul J. (Mary Jo) of Warren, Stephen E. (Tina) of Bellbrook, Ohio; a brother Joseph H. (Kathleen) of Carlsbad, CA; two sisters Martha L. Bartlett of Fairlawn and Mildred I. Richardson of Bishop, GA; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, Andy was preceded in death by brothers Peter Henry, George D., John J., Michael W. Onder and sisters Marian Hollenack and Betty Albert.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Sinchak & Kaszowski Funeral Home 727 E. Market St., Warren, Ohio 44481, where the recitation of the rosary will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

A Requiem Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2017, with Fr. Denis G. Bouchard, F.S.S.P presiding, in Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish, 291 Scoville Dr., Vienna, Ohio 44473, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home prior in leaving for the church.

Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.

The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations in Andy’s to Habitat for Humanity, 345 High St. N.E., Warren, Ohio 44481.
