Norma J. Slyk, 86, of Warren, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 4:40 p.m. in Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown surrounded by her loving family.
Norma was born on May 15, 1930 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Charles H. and Lorna V. Miller Kennedy.
Norma attended Warren G. Harding High School and was a homemaker.
Norma was a founding member of the former St. Pius X Catholic Church in Warren where she was an active member of the Altar & Rosary Society and Bereavement Committee. She also worked BINGO at the church and was an organizer and worked with its food pantry. After the closing of St. Pius X Catholic Church, she and her husband, Bob became members of St. John Paul II Parish on North Street in Warren.
Norma was a founding member of over 60 years of her monthly card club among women in her neighborhood. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and shopping. Most of all, Norma enjoyed the time that she spent with her family, especially all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, who truly were the light of her life.
Norma was married on March 6, 1949 to the love of her life, Robert Slyk and together they shared the love of one daughter Debbie DeCost of Warren; three grandchildren Steve DeCost Jr. of Warren; Chad & Tammy DeCost of Newton Falls and Krissy & Christopher Tominey of Warren; seven great grandchildren Chad G. (Violet) DeCost, Nicholas (Mandi) DeCost, Alex (Kendra) Tominey, Chase Tominey, Dalton, Alexis and Chad R. DeCost Jr.; and three great-great grandchildren Gianna DeCost, Cash Tominey and Matteo DeCost. Norma is also survived by a sister-in-law Barbara Balogh of St. Petersburgh, FL and a brother-in-law Richard “Dick” Slyk of Howland Township.
Besides her parents, Norma was preceded in death by a son-in-law Steve DeCost Sr.; a great grandson Blake Tominey; a sister Alda Yauger and two sisters-in-laws Virginia Shine and Pearl Capan.
Calling hours will take place on Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Sinchak & Kaszowski Funeral Home, where closing prayers will take place on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 9:20 a.m. prior in leaving for the church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017 at St. John Paul II Parish on North Street in Warren with Fr. Christopher Henyk officiating. Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
