John Hrop Jr., 92, of Warren, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 1:20 a.m. surrounded by his loving family at the home he shared with his daughter Lisa.

John was born on November 25, 1924 in Minersville, Pa. the son of the late John Hrop Sr. and Susan (Olexa) Bondura Hrop and came to Warren in 1928.

He and his family were founding members of SS. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church where John was an usher for many years.

On October 8, 1949, he married the love of his life, the former Barbara A. Dowd, and they celebrated 53 years together before her passing on June 12, 2003.

John proudly served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II as a plane engine mechanic stationed at March Field, Riverside, California from 1943-1945.  He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945 and received the Good Conduct Medal.

John was employed as a steelworker first at Republic Steel and later with Ajax Magnathermic Corporation. He served his steelworkers union as recording secretary and retired in 1983.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 620, Moose Lodge and Slovak Club.

John’s hobbies included poker on Thursday nights, going to Mountaineer Casino with his friends, and watching his Cleveland sports teams, especially his beloved Cleveland Indians. John’s greatest happiness came from spending time at various activities and events with his children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Susan (Steve) Finegold of Niles, Stephen (Rene’)Hrop of New Jersey, David Hrop of Newton Falls, Lisa (Jim Begalla) Clark, with whom he made his home; grandchildren Loren (Carollyn) Finegold, Erica, Joshua, Rebecca, David, Jessica,  Alexa Rae (Ron Nickell), Michael, Barbara and great grandchildren Matthew, Nathan, Emma, Elijah and Jordan.
